Creating Successful Student/Alumni Networking Opportunities

Partner with other groups on campus (i.e. Career Development Center, career related services) to maximize resources and work toward common goals

Utilize big events on campus (freshmen orientation, reunion, homecoming, commencement) to draw alums and connect them with students

To make use of alums who have expressed interest in mentoring/hosting internships, work proactively with departments to identity students with common interests

Leverage interest in traditions (both sharing them an learning them) as a way to connect students to alums

Develop career networking opportunities, be it through shadowing services, networking nights (though these are getting a little old), mentoring, or internship programs

For all events, general consensus was:   subsidizing but charging a minimal amount is preferable to making them free

Include students in the planning of events to increase student participation

Utilize volunteer-driven facebook groups for marketing events in specific cities (alumni asc. can offer/feed content to student administrators)

 Best Practices:

Community Catalyst Dinners at President’s Home with Jrs

Reception with trustees during Senior Week

Class Councils—approx. 20-25 people, elected during winter of sr year, 5 year terms

Alumni dinner, alumni open house, traditions and history tour during Freshman Orientation

History and traditions book as gift to incoming Freshmen

Etiquette Dinner during Soph Summer

Access to alumni portal for students seeking career advice

Grandfather program pairing students with 50th reunion classes

Yale 50th reunion class supported alumni/student fellowships

Info sessions for grad school at 5th reunion

More substantive programming for young alums—financial workshops, food, wine, etc.
